DeepSeek V4.1 Flash vs V4 Pro: Prices, Differences and Which One to Use
DeepSeek's only two API models, head to head — official peak and off-peak prices, the exact cost multiplier (3.3x–4.4x per token column, up to 7.3x on cached input), the two real feature differences, and a routing rule that keeps most traffic on Flash.
DeepSeek’s API sells exactly two models, and this is the whole decision: DeepSeek V4.1 Flash (deepseek-flash, the successor to V4 Flash) or DeepSeek V4 Pro (deepseek-v4-pro). They share the same 1M-token context, nearly the same feature list and the same peak/off-peak clock. What differs is price — Pro costs 3.3x to 4.4x more per token column, and up to 7.3x more on cached input — plus two capability lines: only Flash accepts images, and Flash allows five times the concurrency. There is no workload mix in which Pro is the cheaper model. The only question is whether Pro’s quality on your hardest calls is worth a multiplier that this page makes exact.

All prices below are DeepSeek’s official API list prices from its official pricing page, verified 2026-10-28. Gateway resellers are separate schedules and are not mixed in. For the full DeepSeek price list in one place, see DeepSeek API pricing and our DeepSeek provider page.
The head-to-head
| deepseek-flash | deepseek-v4-pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Model served | DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 | DeepSeek-V4-Pro-0813 |
| Input (cache miss) / 1M | $0.15 off-peak / $0.30 peak | $0.66 off-peak / $1.32 peak |
| Input (cache hit) / 1M | $0.003 off-peak / $0.006 peak | $0.022 off-peak / $0.044 peak |
| Output / 1M | $0.60 off-peak / $1.20 peak | $1.98 off-peak / $3.96 peak |
| Context window | 1,000,000 tokens | 1,000,000 tokens |
| Max output | 384K tokens | 384K tokens |
| Vision (image input) | Yes | No |
| Concurrency limit | 2,500 | 500 |
| JSON output, tool calls, Responses API, Anthropic API | Yes | Yes |
Peak hours are 01:00–04:00 and 06:00–10:00 UTC, Monday to Friday, excluding Chinese public holidays. Everything else — including all weekend hours and Chinese public holidays — is off-peak at exactly half price, for both models. Neither model has a published Batch tier; off-peak is the discount.
The multiplier, column by column
Pro is not one fixed multiple of Flash. The premium depends on which column your workload leans on:
- Cache-miss input: 4.4x ($0.66 vs $0.15 off-peak)
- Output: 3.3x ($1.98 vs $0.60 off-peak)
- Cache-hit input: 7.3x ($0.022 vs $0.003 off-peak) — Pro’s steepest premium, and the reason cache-heavy workloads should think hardest before leaving Flash
Because every column is more expensive on Pro, no input/output mix and no cache hit rate makes Pro cheaper. What changes with the mix is only how large the penalty is — between about 3.4x and 4.2x at realistic blends, as the next table shows.
What a month costs, by workload shape
Each scenario is 10M tokens. Off-peak shown first; peak is exactly double for both models.
| Workload (10M tokens) | Flash, off-peak / peak | V4 Pro, off-peak / peak | Pro multiplier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard mix (80% input / 20% output) | $2.40 / $4.80 | $9.24 / $18.48 | 3.85x |
| Output-heavy (20% input / 80% output) | $5.10 / $10.20 | $17.16 / $34.32 | 3.36x |
| Input-heavy (95% input / 5% output) | $1.73 / $3.45 | $7.26 / $14.52 | 4.21x |
| Standard mix, 50% of input cached | $1.81 / $3.62 | $6.69 / $13.38 | 3.69x |
Scale the standard mix to 100M tokens a month and the gap becomes a budget line: Flash costs $24.00 off-peak against Pro’s $92.40 — a $68.40 monthly difference ($136.80 at peak). At low volumes the absolute gap is small enough that quality can reasonably win; at high volumes the multiplier, not the sticker price, is the decision.
The routing rule: pay the multiplier only where it earns
Most production traffic is not equally hard. The cost-effective pattern on DeepSeek is to default to Flash and escalate only the calls where Pro measurably changes the result. At the standard 80/20 mix, off-peak, the blended cost per 10M tokens is:
| Share of tokens routed to V4 Pro | Cost per 10M tokens (off-peak) |
|---|---|
| 0% (all Flash) | $2.40 |
| 10% | $3.08 |
| 20% | $3.77 |
| 50% | $5.82 |
| 100% (all Pro) | $9.24 |
Sending one call in five to Pro raises the bill by about 57% over all-Flash — not by 285%. Routing is how you buy Pro’s quality without paying its multiplier on traffic that never needed it. Two hard constraints shape the routing, both from the official table above: anything involving image input must stay on Flash (Pro has no vision), and high-parallelism bursts fit Flash’s 2,500 concurrency limit far better than Pro’s 500.
One honest limit to this advice: DeepSeek’s pricing documentation publishes no benchmark scores, so the size of Pro’s quality advantage cannot be priced from official data. Treat “hard reasoning and coding” as Pro’s intended tier, then measure on a sample of your own traffic before fixing the escalation share — a 20% share that earns nothing is still a 57% surcharge.
What is identical — and the billing traps
- Same context, same ceiling. Both models take 1M tokens of context and up to 384K tokens of output, and both support JSON output, tool calls, the Responses API and the Anthropic-format endpoint. Choosing Pro buys model quality, not a bigger window.
- The clock doubles both bills. A call at 09:30 UTC on a Tuesday costs twice the same call at 15:00 UTC or on a Sunday, on either model. Queued work should be scheduled off-peak before it is upgraded to Pro — timing saves 50%, the model switch costs 285%.
- Old Flash names are Flash bills. The retired names
deepseek-v4-flashanddeepseek-v4-flash-vision-expstill work, but requests are served by V4.1 Flash and billed at Flash rates. There is no third, hidden model in this comparison. - Tool calls are a separate line from November 1, 2026. DeepSeek’s standalone Search and Fetch APIs cost $0.75 per 1,000 successful requests, and server-side tool calls made when you use the API through DeepSeek Harness, Claude Code or Codex — free until then — start billing at that rate from 00:00 Beijing time on November 1, 2026 (16:00 UTC on October 31). This applies on top of token prices and does not differ between the two models.
Verdict
- Choose Flash as the default: high-volume chat, extraction, classification, document pipelines, anything with images, and anything cache-heavy — its $0.003 cache-hit rate is the cheapest input column on either price list.
- Choose V4 Pro selectively: the hardest reasoning and coding calls, where you have measured a quality difference on your own tasks and the roughly 3.9x standard-mix premium is acceptable for that slice of traffic.
- Choose both, routed, if your traffic mixes the two — which, at these prices, is most production workloads.
